“Rebel Moon” Won’t Show Its Rebel Moon

Netflix

Though its title refers to a location, it turns out Zack Snyder’s two-part space opera epic “Rebel Moon” will not actually show said location on screen.

The story is set around a colony on the agricultural moon of Veldt on the galaxy’s edge. The peace is threatened by the armies of the tyrannical regent Belisarius (Ed Skrein) and the ferocious and all-powerful Imperium.

Veldt’s natives turn to a newcomer named Kora (Sofia Boutella) for help. She sets out in search of warriors from other planets to fight the tyrannical armies. But keeping her band of rebels together may be harder than she expected.

Speaking with Empire (via Screen Rant), Snyder says that there is an actual ‘rebel moon’ in the universe in which the story is set, and it is referred to in the films, but it is never actually shown and is potentially being saved for a third entry:

“The Rebel Moon is not the moon that they’re on. The title was conceptual, but there’s a planet named Vanna, and Vanna is the rebel moon. It’s not even in one shot of this movie!”

Snyder also indicates he hoped to expand “Rebel Moon” into both a TV series dealing with the rise of the film’s villain Balisarius, along with that potential third film which would finally reveal Vanna. Netflix reportedly spent around $166 million on the two films.

The cast for the film also includes Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Stz Nair, Bae Doona, Michiel Huisman, Jena Malone, Cary Elwes, Ray Fisher, Corey Stoll, Alfonso Herrera, Cleopatra Coleman, Stuart Martin, Kingston Foster, Ingvar Sigurdsson, Fra Fee and the voice of Anthony Hopkins.

Snyder co-wrote the film with “300” co-writer Kurt Johnstad, and “Army of the Dead” co-writer Shay Hatten. “Rebel Moon: Part One” releases on December 22nd, “Rebel Moon: Part Two” doesn’t have a release date as yet but producer Deborah Snyder says Netflix hopes to “bridge the two releases with some other things that we’re working on.”
