Australian-born Rebecca Breeds (“The Originals,” “Home and Away”) has scored the title role in “Clarice,” the CBS crime drama pilot based on the famous Clarice Starling character from Thomas Harris’ Hannibal Lecter novels.
Set in 1993, a year after the events of “The Silence of the Lambs,” the series is said to be a deep dive into the untold personal story of Clarice Starling (Breeds) as she returns to the field to pursue serial murderers and sexual predators while navigating the high stakes political world of Washington, D.C.
Brilliant and vulnerable, her bravery gives her an inner light that draws monsters and madmen to her. Her complex psychological makeup comes from a challenging childhood, and her drive comes from her need to escape the burden of family secrets that have haunted her throughout her life.
Breeds takes on the role made famous by Jodie Foster’s Oscar-winning performance in the 1991 film “The Silence of the Lambs”. Julianne Moore took on the role in Ridley Scott’s sequel “Hannibal”.
As “Hannibal” is set ten years after the events of ‘Silence’, the series shouldn’t run into issues of crossing into familiar territory and the character of Hannibal Lecter is not expected to be part of the series.
“Clarice” is written and executive produced by Alex Kurtzman, Heather Kadin and Jenny Lumet and the project has a big series commitment with a writers room already been set up by Secret Hideout, MGM Television and CBS Television Studios.
