Just over a year after its launch and the Disney+ streaming service is not only now in dozens of global territories, it has reached 86.8 million subscribers according to Disney CEO Bob Chapek.
The new subscriber number kicked off the company’s four-hour investor presentation which was hosted virtually from their Burbank headquarters. That’s up from 73.7 million as of October 3rd.
Disney executive chairman Bob Iger, who setup Disney+ and now serves as a “creative content czar” of sorts, says the company will always prioritize “quality not volume… [quality] always holds its value across the board”. As a result, he says the only real line ultimately between Disney’s shorter form TV content and theatrical content is ‘length’.
This can be seen with the Disney Animation feature “Raya and the Last Dragon” which is going to follow a similar model to what Warner Bros. Pictures is doing with “Wonder Woman 1984” and its entire 2021 slate – namely debuting in cinemas and on Disney+ the same day in March next year.
Disney did not announce plans for anything else in its slate to follow this plan, which means a repeat of this scenario will probably be decided upon on a case by case basis and likely with the agreement of the key players involved (thus avoiding the legal headaches WarnerMedia has found itself in).
