Raimi On Finishing “Doctor Strange” Sequel

Having essentially helped blossom the superhero genre into the dominant force it is today with his “Spider-Man” trilogy, filmmaker Sam Raimi is now set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The helmer brings his signature touch as director to the upcoming “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” which is set to debut in May. The film follows directly on from “Spider-Man: No Way Home” as Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange pays the price for the multiverse shenanigans of that film.

The film has also been plagued by talk of extensive reshoots and questions about just how complete the film is. Turns out Raimi himself isn’t sure if it’s done just yet, as he tells Variety:

“I wish I knew the answer to that question. I think we’re done, but we just cut everything. We’re just starting to test the picture and we’ll find out if there’s anything that’s got to be picked up. If something’s unclear or another improvement I can make in this short amount of time left, I’ll do it. One thing I know about the Marvel team is they won’t stop. They’ll keep pushing it until it’s as close to being great as it could.”

Marvel Studios famously works and adjust their films right up until the deadline, and additional filming is par for the course in these movies. Raimi has nothing but praise for the process of working with the studio:

“Marvel’s been a great team to work with. I think that was a not-surprising surprise. I’ve been super-supported by the whole Marvel operations, starting at the top with Kevin Feige, and working all the way down to the crews that they work with. [They’re] super professional and have supported me every step of the way.”

Raimi has also seen “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and unshockingly called it “so much fun… The best word I can say is it was refreshing for me.”

“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” is scheduled to open on May 6th.
