Famed Greek composer Vangelis, known for his haunting synth scores for iconic films including “Blade Runner” and “Chariots of Fire,” has died at the age of 79.

Vangelis, the stage name for artist Evangelos Odessey Papathanassiou, was renowned for his pioneering electronic music work with synthesizers.

Vangelis performed all of his own instruments, which included piano and drums, and won the Oscar for his “Chariots of Fire” score in 1982.

Other films he scored included “Missing,” “Antarctica,” the Gibson/Hopkins led take on “The Bounty,” Ridley Scott’s “1492: Conquest of Paradise” and Oliver Stone’s “Alexander”.

No cause of death has been announced. Our condolences go out to his friends and family.
