Famed South Africa born, British film industry stalwart and director Roger Michell has died at the age of 65. The universally-liked helmer’s passing was sudden and has sent a shock through the industry.

Michell helmed fifteen films over his career, most famously rom-com “Notting Hill,” Peter O’Toole’s final film “Venus,” the Ben Affleck & Samuel L. Jackson-led road rage drama “Changing Lanes,” the Daniel Craig-led stalking thriller “Enduring Love,” and the Rachel Weisz-led adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s “My Cousin Rachel”.

Other notable films include “The Mother,” “Hyde Park on the Hudson,” “Le Week-End,” “Morning Glory,” “Nothing Like a Dame,” “Blackbird,” “My Night with Reg” and well-regard mini-series like “Downtown Lagos,” “The Buddha of Suburbia” and 1995’s “Persuasion”. He most recently directed “The Duke”.

Michell, who separated from his second wife and actress Anna Maxwell Martin last year, is survived by four children.
