Human remains in the wilderness found by hikers near Mount Baldy in California on Saturday have now been officially identified as those of British actor Julian Sands who has been missing since January.
The San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department in a statement says: “The identification process for the body located on Mt. Baldy on June 24, 2023, has been completed and was positively identified as 65-year-old Julian Sands of North Hollywood.”
They add that the manner of death is still under investigation, pending further test results. They also thanked all the volunteers that worked tirelessly to locate Sands after he went missing in early January.
Sands was an avid outdoorsman and was reported missing January 13th after he had gone hiking in the Baldy Bowl Trail area of the San Gabriel Mountains approximately 50 miles northeast of Los Angeles. Volunteers have been searching the area since then, with unusually severe winter hampering their earlier efforts.
The actor broke through in the 1980s with the Oscar-nominated “The Killing Fields,” the Merchant-Ivory drama “A Room With a View” and the supernatural horror tale “Warlock” which became a franchise.
Other film works include “Arachnophobia,” “Boxing Helena,” “Naked Lunch,” “Leaving Las Vegas,” “Grand Isle” and “The Turn of the Screw” and more recently “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”. TV works include “24,” “Banshee,” “Stargate: SG-1,” “Smallville,” “Crossbones,” “Jackie Chan Adventures,” “Gotham,” “Will,” “Lipstick Jungle,” and the Stephen King mini-series “Rose Red”. He also had various roles in the “Star Wars: The Old Republic” video game.
