R.I.P. Irrfan Khan

Beloved Bollywood star Irrfan Khan, who also successfully crossed over into Hollywood, has died aged 53.

Khan was admitted to the intensive care unit of Mumbai’s Kokilaben hospital on Tuesday with a colon infection and on Wednesday morning a statement was released confirming his death.

Famed for his modesty and integrity, Khan is best known to English-speaking audiences as the police inspector in “Slumdog Millionaire” along with key roles in “Jurassic World,” “Life of Pi,” “A Mighty Heart,” “The Darjeeling Limited,” “The Amazing Spider-Man,” and “Inferno”.

Khan’s breakthrough role came in 2002 with “The Warrior” which was selected for the prestigious San Sebastián film festival and won the BAFTA award for best British film. Khan subsequently broke into mainstream Indian films includingfamed “Macbeth” adaptation “Maqbool” and scored acclaim for his work in films like “The Lunchbox”.

Khan is survived by his wife, Sutapa Sikdar, and sons Babil and Ayan.
