British acting stalwart Geoffrey Palmer, best known for his starring role opposite Judi Dench on the long-running sitcom “As Time Goes By,” has died peacefully at home at the age of 93.
Palmer and Dench reunited for the opening scenes of 1997 James Bond feature “Tomorrow Never Dies” as rivals. Often playing men in authority, though often deft at comedy, Palmer had roles in films like “A Fish Called Wanda,” “Paddington,” “The Madness of King George,” “Mrs. Brown,” “Anna and the King ,” “Peter Pan,” and “Lost Christmas”.
He was also happy to pop up on TV fairly regularly with regular roles on “The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin” and “Butterflies” and notable guest starring roles in “The Saint,” “Fawlty Towers,” “The Goodies,” “The Professionals,” “Absolute Power” and “The Avengers” along with multiple guest spots in numerous eras of “Doctor Who”. His last appearance is in the film “An Unquiet Life” which is currently in post-production.
Palmer was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to drama in 2004. He is survived by his wife Sally Green, daughter Harriet, and son Charlie Palmer, who is a director on shows like “Poldark” and “Doctor Who”. He directed his father in an episode of Agatha Christie’s “Poirot”.
