FilmRise has acquired Sundance and Berlin 2020 drama “Surge” starring Ben Whishaw as an airport security guard crumbling under the strain of his job and the pressures of a dysfunctional family.

A series of frustrations lead him to commit an impulsive act of rebellion that releases a wilder side of his personality which takes him on an uninhibited journey across London. Aneil Karia (“Top Boy”) makes their feature directorial debut on the project. [Source: FilmRise]

Exoplanet
MGM has scored feature rights to Minnie Schedeen’s short story “Exoplanet” with “The Old Guard” director Gina Prince-Bythewood is attached to direct while Matt Tolmach and David Manpearl will produce. Schedeen will adapt her elevated sci-fi thriller short story for the screen. [Source: Deadline]

Crying in H Mart
MGM’s Orion Pictures label has picked up the rights to Michelle Zauner’s memoir “Crying in H Mart” with Stacey Sher and Jason Kim on board to produce. Zauner will adapt her book.

The story tracks her years growing up as a Korean American in Oregon, months spent at her grandmother’s apartment in Seoul, her career in the East Coast indie music scene, and her relationship with her mother who was diagnosed with terminal cancer. [Source: THR]

Sweet Girl
Netflix has finally set an August 20th release date for the revenge action-thriller “Sweet Girl” starring Jason Momoa and Isabela Merced. Brian Andrew Mendoza helms from a script written by Gregg Hurwitz, Philip Eisner and Will Staples.

Momoa plays a husband who vows to bring justice to those responsible for his wife’s death while also trying to protect the only family he has left…his daughter.

Space Jam: A New Legacy
ESPN has dropped a featurette for “Space Jam: A New Legacy” in the style of its acclaimed and multiple award-winning documentary series “30 for 30” highlighting famous athletes’ careers and legacies. In addition, Warners has released a new poster for the film which comes ahead of the final trailer for it which launches in a few hours.
