Quick News: Sly, Pikachu, Demeter, Hunger

Netflix

Sly
The documentary feature “Sly,” which chronicles the life and career of action hero Sylvester Stallone, has been chosen as the Closing Night Gala for the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday, September 16th. The film will then stream on Netflix this November.

Directed by Thom Zimny, the doco explores Stallone’s half-century career in Hollywood, from his underdog beginnings to his meteoric rise in becoming one of the iconic actors of his generation.

Though a Netflix title, the film is NOT covered by the SAG-AFTRA TV and theatrical agreements so, theoretically, Stallone could potentially appear in Toronto to promote it. That said, with the actor’s strike likely to be still going on during the fest, he may choose not to. [Source: THR]

Detective Pikachu Returns
Nintendo has released the latest trailer for its “Detective Pikachu Returns” game which launches on October 6th exclusively on the Switch.

The clip sees Detective Pikachu offering a day in the life look at being a Pokemon detective. The original “Detective Pikachu” game was released in 2016 in Japan before releasing worldwide in 2018 and was adapted as a live-action film in 2019.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter
Universal Pictures has released a new featurette for “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” ahead of its release this Friday. The clip offers a behind-the-scenes look at bringing Dracula to life, with both creature actor Javier Botet and director Andre Øvredal going into the make-up and tone of the character.

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes
Lionsgate has released a clip from the upcoming prequel “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” this one taking on the form of an Academy orientation promo as several characters from the film explain the institution and welcome new students.

Peter Dinklage’s Academy Dean Casca Highbottom, Viola Davis’ head game maker Dr. Volumnia Gaul, Josh Andres Rivera’s Sejanus Plinth and Tom Blyth’s Coriolanus Snow all feature in the clip for the film, which opens November 17th.
