Streaming service MUBI has acquired exclusive subscription VOD rights to “The Favorite” and “The Lobster” director Yorgos Lanthimos’ new short film “Nimic”. Matt Dillon stars as a professional cellist whose encounter with a stranger (Daphne Patakia) on the subway has unexpected and far-reaching ramifications on his life. In Wonder
Netflix has announced a November 23rd premiere date for “In Wonder,” a new documentary about singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes that arrives just days ahead of his fourth studio album on December 4th. Grant Singer helms the feature-length documentary offering an intimate look at Mendes’ life and journey, filmed over the last few years including his 2019 self-titled world tour. [Source: Variety]
The Others
Universal Pictures and Sentient Entertainment are set to partner on the previously announced remake of Alejandro Amenabar’s 2001 supernatural thriller “The Others”. Nicole Kidman starred in the original as a woman living in a darkened old family house with her two photosensitive children, only to become convinced that the home is haunted. [Source: THR]
Selfie
Netflix has acquired John Poliquin’s short film “Selfie” with plans for a feature-length remake exploring the horrors of body image in the age of social media. Poliquin and Colin Minihan, who wrote the short and the recent Shudder original “Spiral,” will also pen the film adaptation while Benjamin Anderson and Minihan will produce. [Source: Deadline]
Bad Hair
NEON has announced it will bring Justin Simien’s horror-comedy “Bad Hair” to drive-in theaters ahead of its October 23rd debut on Hulu. The story follows an ambitious young woman (Elle Lorraine) in 1989 who gets a weave in order to succeed in the music television industry, only to find her new hair may have a mind of its own. Drive-ins in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, New Orleans, Detroit, Austin, Sacramento and Las Vegas are all being targeted though a list of participating ones hasn’t been set as yet.
