Quibi Launches To A Fraction Of Disney+

Preliminary estimates from mobile-analytics firm Sensor Tower has revealed that Jeffrey Katzenberg’s ambitious mobile-only short form streaming service Quibi pulled in first-day app downloads of around 300,000.

To put that in comparison, the launch of Disney+ in the U.S. and Canada had four million installs on its launch day, meaning Quibi’s audience was about 7.5% of the Mouse House’s flagship service on its first day. However it came in ahead of the launch of HBO Now in 2015 which saw approximately 45,000 installs on its launch day in 2015.

One limiting factor is that Quibi is a mobile-only service and can’t be viewed on TVs either by app or by casting shows to TVs via Bluetooth, though the latter functionality is expected to come eventually.

A little over two dozen series launched with the service with the dark and violent drama “When the Streetlights Go On,” the docuseries “Run This City” and ” I Promise,” and Sam Raimi’s horror thriller “50 States of Fright” scoring the best notices.

As of Tuesday morning, Quibi ranks as the No. 3 top free app overall on Apple’s U.S. App Store, behind only Zoom and TikTok.
