Quan Offers A “Goonies 2” Script Update

Warner Bros. Pictures

For what has seemed like longer than this website has been around, talk of a sequel to 1985’s classic kids adventure tale “The Goonies” has swirled.

Things took a serious turn in February, though, when “Old Henry” scribe Potsy Ponciroli became attached to pen the follow-up to Richard Donner’s film – a movie that celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.

Ponciroli offered a brief update in August, saying a first draft had been turned in that had been “very well received” and things were moving in the right direction.

Now, actor Ke Huy Quan has offered their own update while out promoting his role in the “Zootopia” sequel. The actor tells ComicBook.com:

“I first heard about it when I saw Steven Spielberg at an event and he was so excited. We try to do it, so let’s manifest it. I know we’ve been trying for the last 40 years, but I feel quite good about it.

This time, Chris Columbus and Spielberg are developing it, we have an incredible writer. I mean, I read he turned in the second draft and they’re really happy about it. I was telling Fortune (Feimster, Zootopia 2 co-star), I said we’re gonna do it. I want her to be in it. I would love to revisit that character and go on another adventure with my Goonies brothers and sisters.”

The original followed a group of misfit kids who embark on a treasure hunt to save their homes from foreclosure. The journey takes them through underground tunnels, booby traps, and encounters with a crime family in an effort to discover the long-lost treasure of the pirate One-Eyed Willy.

Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Martha Plimpton, and Ke Huy Quan starred.
