“Quake II” Remaster Hits Consoles & PC

Bethesda

Timed with the start of QuakeCon, Bethesda yesterday both announced and released the long-awaited remastered version of the original “Quake II” which is available today for $9.99 for PC, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation.

In addition, the game is now available on Game Pass and those who already own it via the Microsoft Store, Steam, or Good Old Games (GOG) will get the remaster as a free update.

Developer id Software remained close to the 1997 original but added various modern features like cloud saves, accessibility options, 4K resolution, widescreen support, visual enhancements, and split-screen local and online co-op/multiplayer.

In addition, the remaster includes “restored content previously left on the cutting room floor” along with the original soundtrack by Sonic Mayhem. The release includes both original mission packs (“Ground Zero,” “The Reckoning”), leading to a total of 33 campaign levels and 21 deathmatch maps.

That’s not all. It also includes a free copy of “Quake 64,” and an all-new expansion titled “Call of the Machine” featuring another 28 campaign levels, a deathmatch level, and a new story. MachineGames developed that.

The project is not to be confused with Nvidia’s 2019 ray-traced version of the game which is an entirely separate thing.
