Ahead of his much raved about “One Battle After Another” hitting cinemas this Friday, “There Will Be Blood” and “Punch Drunk Love” filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson has revealed a surprising revelation.
The celebrated auteur worked with Tom Cruise back on 1999’s “Magnolia,” Cruise’s performance drawing raves. In a new interview with Le Figaro, Anderson says he was disappointed Cruise never called him about potentially directing a “Mission: Impossible” film:”
“I would have loved to [direct a Mission: Impossible], but I never got that call. I was very disappointed. I think he’s done with Mission: Impossible now, so it won’t happen.”
Anderson has previously admitted to being a fan of Cruise’s franchise but has mostly stuck to his own idiosyncratic projects. While “One Battle After Another” seems like that on the surface, the film boasts a blockbuster sized budget with a lot of the reviews raving about how Anderson directed the film’s action set pieces.
However the “Mission: Impossible” franchise is over it seems, this year’s ‘The Final Reckoning’ came out to mixed reviews and while it did a solid $598 million in global box-office, the prohibitively expensive $300+ million budget has made the franchise unviable short of a full on cost-conscious reboot or switch back to TV series.
Cruise has discussed his plans to work with more auteurs in the future, so a Cruise-Anderson team up could well happen again.
