PS5 “Spider-Man” Overhauls Peter Parker’s Face

On Wednesday, Sony announced new details for “Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered,” a ground up remaster of “Marvel’s Spider-Man” for the PlayStation 5.

In a new post on the PS Blog, they are dubbing this the definitive version of the game with new assets, technology, and updates. This includes updating the city’s environment with improved models and materials, ray-traced reflections, ambient shadows and a new sky and weather system.

Characters are also upgraded with “higher fidelity skin, eye, and teeth shaders to individually-rendered strands of hair”. As a result of this though there’s been one major change – that of Peter Parker himself who is getting a whole new face.

The character’s facial model has been changed with actor John Bubniak’s distinct face being replaced by model Ben Jordan, turning the character from a young John Krasinski look-a-like to a young Tom Holland look-a-like.

Insomniac community director James Stevenson has explained the reason for the change, saying it ties into the need for a “better match for the facial capture done by Yuri Lowenthal”. 49-year-old Lowenthal provided the voice work on the title. Insomniac creative director Bryan Intihar also tweeted a statement about the change:

“Today’s news about the new Peter Parker face model has surprised some of you, and we at Insomniac totally understand your reaction. Heck, it even took me awhile to get used to Peter’s new look. But as we discussed the franchise’s future and moving to the PS5, it quickly became apparent that delivering even more believable-looking characters made finding a better facial match for actor Yuri Lowenthal – who we all love as Peter – a necessity. We care as much about this character as your attachment to him, so please know we didn’t make this decision/change lightly. As we did throughout the development of Marvel’s Spider-Man, we’ll continue to read your comments, listen, and always be looking or ways to improve every facet of the game. At the same time, I hope you can trust us that this decision is what we feel is best for the future of the franchise and our upcoming goals for this beloved Marvel character.”

Like ‘Miles Morales,’ the game is essentially offering two modes with the ‘performance’ mode offering 60fps. The game will also utilise the PS5’s near-instant loading, Spatial 3D Audio and the new DualSense controller’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. There’s also a new photo mode and three new suits including Andrew Garfield’s “The Amazing Spider-Man” suit.

“Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered” will be available on PlayStation 5 globally on November 12th as part of the Ultimate Edition version of “Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales”. A paid upgrade to that version will be available in standard editions of “Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales”.

Players who already own “Marvel’s” Spider-Man on PlayStation 4 won’t be able to upgrade to the new version for free, though the old PS4 version will still be perfectly playable on the PS5. Check out a 60fps clip of gameplay, and a cut scene with Peter’s new face below.
