We’ve yet to see what the second generation of PlayStation VR looks like. A PS5 exclusive, the new unit will see some decided upgrades from the last one.
UploadVR has now scored more details about the planned refresh from sources at Sony. According to them, the new headset includes a 4K resolution screen, a lens separation adjustment dial, eye-tracking, and a motor in the headset to give haptic feedback.
The resolution of the headset will apparently be 4000×2080 pixels, about 8.3 million in total, which is slightly more than a typical 4K display.
Much like the Oculus Quest 2, the new headset will use onboard cameras to track the controllers and so won’t require a PS Camera. Like that set as well when it’s tethered to a PC, there will only be one cord that will connect via a standard USB-C connection.
Where it differs from the Oculus though is the alleged eye-tracking capabilities that the site speculates allows for the inclusion of foveated rendering.
That technique reduces the quality of images in the peripherals whilst supersampling the focus area. The eye-tracking could also improve the overall VR experience with improved throwing mechanics and more life-like interactions.
The controllers for the new set were revealed in March and feature adaptive triggers, haptic feedback, finger touch detection, tracking, and essentially all the PS5’s DualSense controller abilities.
The PS5 PSVR isn’t expected to launch until at least 2022.
