Australian filmmaker Alex Proyas has released “Mask of the Evil Apparition,” a short film set in the world of his 1998 sci-fi neo-noir cult classic “Dark City”.

From now until August 19th, the short will be available via VOD as part of this year’s Popcorn Frights Film Festival. In the short, a young woman with no memory searches a deserted nocturnal city and encounters twin brothers who warn her of the ‘Mysterious Ones’ who are after her.

Bloody Disgusting scored access to a Q&A with Proyas as part of the virtual presentation where Proyas revealed he has a TV series based on the franchise in early development:

“Dark City right now is really an intriguing one to me because we’re developing a series, a Dark City series…which we’re in the very early stages [of] but I’m having to reanalyze in order to construct a new story. I’m having to go back and kind of jog my memory as to what we actually did and what I think worked and what I think didn’t work and re-evaluate my own film, so that’s been a very interesting experience as well which I’ve not done before.”

Rufus Sewell, Kiefer Sutherland, Jennifer Connelly, and William Hurt starred in the original film which scored a theatrical release in 1998 and then an improved director’s cut in 2008.
