Producer Teases “Rebel Moon” Differing Cuts

Netflix

Back in August when the teaser trailer for Zack Snyder’ two-film sci-fi epic “Rebel Moon,” the filmmaker confirmed rumors from March that he was working on extended cuts for both parts of the movie.

They would join the more regular cuts of the film which were aiming to score PG-13 ratings. Lo and behold, the other day the MPA rated the first of the films – “Rebel Moon Part 1: A Child of Fire” – a PG-13 for what’s described as “sequences of strong violence, sexual assault, bloody images, language, sexual material, and partial nudity”.

At the time Snyder said the director’s cut would boast close to an hour of extra content. Now producer Deborah Snyder has affirmed that and added a little more detail about what’s happening with both cuts in a new interview with Total Film (via GamesRadar).

She says, unlike past instances for Snyder, the director’s cuts here were pre-planned and aim to expand Snyder’s vision where runtime and rating are less of an issue. She explains:

“The difference [this time] is that we’ve planned for it… it’s not an afterthought. We’re still tweaking, but they’ll probably be 45 minutes to an hour longer, each one. You get more character. You get a lot more of everything. It’s not just a few deleted scenes.”

Boasting “Star Wars,” “Heavy Metal,” “Dune” and Kurosawa influences, the films follow Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious young woman who recruits warriors from neighboring planets to rebel against a tyrannical empire known as the Imperium that’s invaded their peaceful colony moon.

The theatrical cuts of “Rebel Moon Part 1: A Child of Fire” will have a limited cinema run ahead of its streaming debut on December 22nd. “Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scargiver” will release on the service on April 19th 2024.

The director’s cuts of both versions have not yet set release dates.
