Approaching the halfway point in the year, no film has been bigger in 2023 thus far than Universal Pictures and Illumination’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”.
To date, the film has broken numerous box-office records, racked up $1.313 billion in ticket sales, at least $75 million in PVOD revenue, and more. Critics may have been mixed on the film, but audiences have been seemingly thrilled with the film.
Thus the inevitable question has floated around – when will there be a sequel? With the film’s success, there’s no doubt that Nintendo and Illumination will work together again, and those in charge have already suggested more is on the way without explicitly stating it.
Now, speaking with ET Online, the voice of movie Mario himself Chris Pratt teased that news about a sequel to the first film should be coming quite soon:
“We’re in the midst of this writers’ strike, and so everything has been paused and [put] on hold for the right reasons.
I really do support the WGA and our writers. When the negotiations have been completed and the writers feel comfortable moving forward, then it’ll be time to start talking about what’s next for that.
We’re so grateful for the support, though. [It’s] really shocking to me how successful that movie’s been. I mean, I expected that people would love it the way I was excited about it, but it’s truly multigenerational around the world. People love it.
They love Mario… It’s a really fun, funny, cute, heartwarming movie, and, God, I can’t believe I’m part of it.”
“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is both in cinemas and on PVOD platforms right now.
