Glen Powell and Michael B. Jordan are rumored to be in talks to star as James ‘Sonny’ Crockett and Ricardo ‘Rico’ Tubbs in the new “Miami Vice” film at Universal Pictures.
Nexus Point News broke the story, indicating the pair are up for the film which is being helmed by Powell’s “Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski and written initially by that film’s Eric Warren Singer before a rewrite by Dan Gilroy (“Andor,” “Nightcrawler”).
Dylan Clark (“The Batman”) is producing the film which will explore the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami. The project is said to be inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark television series.
Michael Mann produced the original five-season 1980s TV series created by Anthony Yerkovich. It followed two detectives, Crockett and Tubbs, working undercover in Miami in the 1980s.
The show was famous for its pastel suits, contemporary music and filmmaking style, which broke the form of most TV series of the type. Mann then directed a film remake in 2006, turning it into a gritty cop thriller starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx.
Casting is currently underway and production will begin next year with the project to be shot in IMAX. It is scheduled for an August 6th 2027 release.
