Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things,” starring Emma Stone in a story of a woman resurrected Frankenstein-style by a Victorian-era scientist (Willem Dafoe), has won the Golden Lion for best film at the 80th Venice International Film Festival.
The film has taken in universal raves thus far, but Lanthimos lost out on Best Director, which went to Matteo Garrone for his migration drama “Me Captain”.
The runner-up film award of the Grand Jury Prize went to Ryusuke Hamaguchi’a “Evil Does Not Exist,” whilst a Special Jury Prize was awarded to Agnieszka Holland’s refugee drama “Green Border”.
Alex Braverman’s Andy Kaufman doco “Thank You Very Much” took the Best Documentary prize, and Lee Hong-chi’s “Love is a Gun” won Lion of the Future for Best First Feature.
On the acting front, Peter Sarsgaard won Best Actor playing a man with dementia in “Memory” whilst Cailee Spaeny took Best Actress for her work in as Priscilla Presley in Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla” and Seydou Sarr won Best Young Actor for his work as a Senegalese teenager seeking refuge in Europe in “Io Capitano”.
Pablo Larrain and Guillermo Calderon took Best Screenplay for their Pinochet-as-a-vampire film “El Conde”. Micaela Ramazzotti’s “Felicita”won the Armani beauty audience award.
Gabor Reisz’s Hungarian drama “Explanation for Everything” won best film in the Horizons sidebar, Swedish filmmaker Mika Gustafson won best director in that section for “Paradise is Burning,” and Tergel Bold-Erdene took best actor for “City of Wind” in that section.
