“True Detective” creator Nic Pizzolatto is reportedly refashioning his idea for an original Western drama into a series adaptation of the iconic MGM film “The Magnificent Seven” for Amazon Prime.
Announced in early March, Amazon’s head of U.S. series and development Nick Pepper reportedly wants to make this the streamer’s version of Paramount’s “Yellowstone” mega-franchise.
When announced, the story was said to revolve around a former outlaw who must reckon with a threat from his past to keep the life and family he has worked so hard to build. He begins an epic journey uniting a formidable gang of indelible figures to face an even greater danger.
Now that it has changed, it’s being described as following an outlaw and his cohorts who unite a disparate band of indelible fighters to defend a settlement of immigrant homesteaders in an open-range war against cattle barons in central Texas.
The shifting of the project into a new “The Magnificent Seven” isn’t going to be too much of a stretch for Pizzolatto, who co-wrote the Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt and Ethan Hawke-led “The Magnificent Seven” film remake in 2016.
Pizzolatto is writing the drama and will executive produce alongside Mark Johnson (“Breaking Bad”) who is currently overseeing AMC’s Anne Rice universe. Lawrence Mirisch and Bruce Kaufman also executive produce and the project is currently in development and has a series commitment penalty attached.
