The Criterion Collection has announced its very first collaboration with Pixar with the release of Andrew Stanton’s “WALL•E” on 4K UHD this November 22nd.
The director-approved edition features a 4K digital master with Dolby Atmos soundtrack on one 4K UHD disc in both Dolby Vision HDR and HDR10+ along with two Blu-rays with the film and special features. There’s also an alternate 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio and stereo soundtracks along with subtitles and descriptive audio.
Extras wise, there’s a boat load starting with two audio commentaries: one featuring Stanton and the other, character supervisor Bill Wise, coproducer Lindsey Collins, story artist Derek Thompson, and lead animator Angus MacLane
There are also new programs on Stanton’s cinematic influences and production designer Ralph Eggleston’s color scripts. Then there’s a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film, including segments from early animation reels.
Leslie Iwerks’ 2007 documentary “The Pixar Story” is included along with more than a dozen documentaries exploring the film’s production and robots.
“Anatomy of a Scene: The Plant” offers a masterclass with Stanton, whilst “WALL•E”: A to Z” is a new program featuring Stanton and coscreenwriter Jim Reardon.
There’s also a tour of the Pixar Living Archive, deleted scenes featuring commentary, Stanton’s student film “A Story” from 1987, MacLane’s 2008 short film “BURN•E,” trailers, sketchbook selections, script notes, drawings, artwork, an essay by author Sam Wasson.
As Criterion puts it, the film is “a high-water mark of digital animation, Stanton’s prescient vision of a rapidly oncoming dystopian future, packaged within a dazzling pop-science-fiction love story, is an urgent fable for our troubled millennium.”
