Disney

Appearing at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and Market, Pixar COO Pete Docter has revealed the earliest details on the studio’s upcoming 2027 feature about a black cat.

Titled “Gatto,” the project is directed by Enrico Casarosa (“Luca”) and follows a black cat named Nero in a society in which black cats are viewed as signs of bad luck.

Nero resides in Venice, the city of canals which isn’t ideal considering he can’t swim. He soon becomes caught up in cat society underworld and ends up indebted to a Mafia boss cat named Rocco.

The story sees a street musician named Maya adopting Nero as a stray cat, and they bond because they’re both “black cats” in this society.

The title uses a brshstroked painting art style, a first for Pixar, with over 65,000 oil-painted frames crafted by a team of more than 100 artists. More details are to come before the film opens Summer 2027.

Pixar also showed off a new photo from their Spring 2026 film “Hoppers,” and confirmed that an electronic tablet named Lilypad will serve as the antagonist of “Toy Story 5” which opens next summer.

Pixar’s “Elio” is set to hit cinemas next Friday.
