“Top Gun: Maverick” took the filming of jet combat to new heights with a focus on heavily practical and in-camera effects with the actors in the planes and skilled pilots pulling off some astonishing real-life maneuvers.
That film’s director Joseph Kosinski is bringing that same approach to his upcoming Formula 1 film starring Brad Pitt with a strong focus on practical effects. That includes getting Pitt to drive an F1-style car.
Kosinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer were on hand to discuss the project at an event leading up to Sunday’s Miami Grand Prix.
The film’s actors will be shooting scenes from inside a custom F1-like car designed by Mercedes. A tiny 6K camera will be installed inside to capture footage for the film.
It will run at F1 events from the British GP at Silverstone through to the end of the 2023 season. Filming will reportedly take place when the circuit is due to be empty between sessions with no other cars on track.
The project itself is being pegged as a spiritual successor to Tony Scott’s NASCAR movie “Days of Thunder” in 1990 which starred Tom Cruise and was produced by Bruckheimer. Cruise himself has reportedly volunteered to do some driving if needed.
Seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton serves as a producer on the film and is heavily assisting with the script. The film will see Pitt playing a veteran driver who emerges from retirement to compete alongside a rookie. Damson Idris co-stars.
The film has no title or release date as yet.
