Ticketing platform Filmbot is teaming with several indie distributors for “Lost Films of COVID” – a new initiative to launch in select cinemas in December.
The series features seven film titles from five indie banners of movies that came out in 2020 and 2021 that had their big-screen runs either curtailed or scrapped altogether due to pandemic restrictions.
On the list are the likes of Sean Baker’s “Red Rocket” and Kelly Reichardt’s “First Cow,” both from A24. “Red Rocket” will screen in 35mm in some locations with Baker saying in a statement: “We made ‘Red Rocket’ specifically for the big screen and it makes me so happy to know that audiences who didn’t have the chance to see it that way, finally will.”
NEON is offering Michael Sarnoski’s “Pig” starring Nicolas Cage, and Norwegian doco “The Painter and the Thief”. Rounding out the seven are GKIDS’ Oscar-nominated Irish animated feature “Wolfwalkers,” IFC releasing Natalie Erika James’ acclaimed horror “Relic,” and Film Movement releasing Chinese filmmaker Diao Yinan’s neo-noir “The Wild Goose Lake”.
Participating venues include the Frida Cinema in Santa Ana, Nitehawk Cinemas in Brooklyn, the Gateway Film Center in Columbus, and the Harris Theater in Pittsburgh. The runs will take place from December 12th-14th.
Should it prove a success, it’s thought that the series could continue annually for several years with larger line-ups.
