Apple TV+ has shared the first photo of Oscar and Emmy award-winning actor Michael Douglas as the lead in the upcoming limited series based on the life of pioneer Benjamin Franklin.

The eight-episode drama will focus on one of the greatest gambles of his career. At age 70, without any diplomatic training, Franklin convinced the French monarchy to underwrite America’s experiment in democracy.

He outmaneuvered British spies, French informers, and hostile colleagues to engineer the Franco-American alliance of 1778 and a final peace with England in l783. It was a mission without which America would not have won the Revolution.

His costars include Noah Jupe as his grandson Temple Franklin, Ludivine Sagnier as composer Madame Brillon, Thibault de Montalembert as French diplomat Vergennes, Daniel Mays as the double-agent Edward Bancroft, Assaad Bouab as French polymath Beacumarchais, Jeanne Balibar as salon owner Helvetius, and Eddie Marsan as future U.S. President John Adams.

Currently untitled, the eight-episode series is directed by Tim Van Patten.
