Screenwriter Anthony McCarten (“Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Darkest Hour”) is reportedly working on a contemporary psychological thriller based on Gaston Leroux’s original 1910 novel “Le Fantome de L’Opera” at Muse Of Fire, SB Projects and Compelling Pictures.
Unfolding against London’s contemporary music scene, the story will again depict the destructive relationship and dark love story at the center, but ditch the Gothic romanticism associated with previous interpretations like Andrew Lloyd Weber’s famed “The Phantom of the Opera” Broadway musical.
Instead, this take will lean into the suspense and horror of the original book and will do so on a big scale while boasting a tone akin to “Black Swan” and “Misery”. There will be some songs performed by characters within the story, but it’s not a musical and there are no “characters breaking out into song” moments.
McCarten, Scooter Braun, James Shin, Denis O’Sullivan & Jeff Kalligheri will produce with McCarten penning the screenplay and Braun relying on his roster of big name multi-Grammy winning artists to be involved.
