“Phantom of the Opera” Becomes TV Series

French production company Gaumont (“Narcos”) is developing a new six-part TV miniseries adaptation of Gaston Leroux’s iconic 1910 novel “The Phantom Of The Opera”.

“Alex Rider” author Anthony Horowitz will pen a re-imagining of the gothic story about a disfigured composer who lives in the depths of the Paris Opera House and falls for singer Christine Daae with tragic consequences.

The project will be based on the classic novel and NOT the Andrew Lloyd Webber smash-hit musical based on it. The property has been adapted to screen many times, arguably the most faithful being the 1987 animated feature. The late Joel Schumacher helmed a film version of Weber’s famed musical in 2004.

The news comes as Gaumont UK recently optioned historian Julie Summers biography on wartime Vogue editor Audrey Withers.
