Peter Jackson Adamant He’s “Not Retired”

New Line Cinema

Not including documentaries like WW1 doco “They Shall Not Grow Old” in 2018 and “The Beatles: Get Back” in 2022, filmmaker Peter Jackson hasn’t directed a narrative feature since wrapping up “The Hobbit” trilogy in 2014.

At 63, the man still has years of filmmaking left in him and still occasionally pops up in a producing capacity on films such as with “Mortal Engines” and the animated “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim”.

These days he’s more often seen working with Colossal Biosciences in efforts to bring the Giant Moa bird (an Emu-like creature over three meters tall) back from extinction.

In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Jackson is aware he’s dropped off the radar for some people, but says he’s far from retired:

“No, I’m not retired. We are currently working on three different screenplays. I’m at the moment writing three different scripts.

We are producing and have been writing The Hunt for Gollum, which Andy Serkis is going to direct next year.

I’ve enjoyed working on documentaries, whether they show I’ve grown old or not, and obviously the “Get Back.” The Beatles project. I’ve enjoyed doing various things with The Beatles, which is great, and that’ll probably carry on.

One project it has long been hoped he would tackle is the sequel to 2011’s “The Adventures of Tintin” with Jackson originally tipped to take the helm (while Spielberg would produce) what would be an adaptation of “The Seven Crystal Balls”/”Prisoners of the Sun” two-parter from the comics. Sadly no update on that project has been forthcoming in many years.
