In the wake of the new DC Studios slate announcement, the fate of the few remaining DC series on the air has been decided.
Notably today, HBO Max has cancelled its Batman prequel spin-off “Pennyworth” which wrapped its third and now final season back in November.
Jack Bannon starred as a young Alfred Pennyworth in the series which hailed from “Gotham” creator Bruno Heller. Originating over at Epix (now MGM+), the series was sold to HBO Max where it took on the mouthful of a name “Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler”.
There it joined fellow DC series “Doom Patrol” and “Titans” on the platform. Those two shows were cancelled a few days ago and will finish up with their currently airing fourth seasons.
That leaves Gunn’s “Peacemaker” (which is confirmed to be returning eventually) and the highly acclaimed animated series “Harley Quinn” as the sole DC series set to continue on HBO Max with a fourth-season renewal already handed out.
Gunn was asked at the press event earlier this week about the fate of “Harley Quinn” and says they plan to very much keep moving forward with the Kaley Cuoco-led comedy as DC co-CEO Peter Safran dubbed it “fantastic”. The series could easily fit under the new DC strategy’s ‘Elseworlds’ label and so that fourth run may not be the last.
The only major remaining DC series on air then are at The CW with “The Flash” finishing up this year with its ninth season, “Gotham Knights” about to launch, and “Superman and Lois” ready to kick off a third season. There’s been no indication as to the fate of ‘Knights’, but Gunn previously said they plan to continue “Superman and Lois” for the time being with the show very likely to finish before the new “Superman: Legacy” film hits in mid-2025.
