Jordan Peele’s sci-fi horror tale “Nope” is reportedly on track for a $50 million debut at the cinema this weekend.

The story follows horse rancher siblings OJ (Daniel Kaluuya) and Emerald Haywood (Keke Palmer) who discover something wonderful, and harmful, in the skies above their property.

That opening figure would mark an amount in between his 2017 debut “Get Out” at $33.3 million, and below his 2019 second feature “Us” which debuted to $71.1 million.

Where the film might hit a rougher spot than the others is reception. With 111 reviews counted, the film sits at a very solid 82% (7.6/10) on Rotten Tomatoes. Whilst still very good, it’s notably below the 98% of “Get Out” and 93% of “Us”. Reviews praise its ambition and originality but have issues with its execution and the reviews run the gamut from high praise to praise with caveats (the most common reaction) to outright negative. The film has also drawn comparisons to the likes of “Signs” and “Tremors”.

“Nope” cost considerably more than his predecessors with a $68 million budget after tax incentives are deducted – compared to $4.5 million and $20 million for his first and second films. It recently had its world premiere and Peele has teased to AP Wire he’s open to the idea of a “Get Out” follow-up.

“Nope” opens in the U.S. this Friday followed by an international rollout in coming weeks.
