Peacock has handed out a two season order for “Bel-Air,” the planned drama series reboot of classic Will Smith-led 1990s sitcom “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”.
Smith himself made the announcement Tuesday on YouTube, the series to be based on Morgan Cooper’s viral video that re-imagined the half-hour NBC comedy series as a one-hour serialized contemporary dramatic reimagining that retains the premise of Will’s complicated journey from the streets of West Philadelphia to the gated mansions of Bel-Air.
Cooper’s trailer has racked up over five million views on YouTube alone since it debuted last year. Cooper is attached to co-write and direct the project and will also serve as a co-executive producer.
Chris Collins will serve as showrunner and executive producer in addition to co-writing the script with Cooper. Smith will executive produce along with Quincy Jones, Benny Medina, Miguel Melendez, Terence Carter and original series creators Andy and Susan Borowitz.
Westbrook Studios and Universal Television are backing the project for the streamer which is also currently developing reboots of “Battlestar Galactica” and “Queer as Folk” along with a “Saved by the Bell” sequel series.
An unscripted “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” reunion special featuring the entire cast is taping later this week ahead of a debut on HBO Max at Thanksgiving.
