Legendary “Robocop,” “Total Recall,” “Basic Instinct,” “Showgirls,” “Hollow Man” and “Starship Troopers” filmmaker Paul Verhoeven’s next film which will reportedly be titled “Sans Compter” (Without Counting).
In the latest issue of Premiere (via World of Reel), producer Saïd Ben Saïd confirmed Verhoeven’s next project would be this adaptation of Philippe Dijan’s novel.
It marks the second adaptation of a Dijan novel by Verhoeven, the first being “Oh…” which became his 2016 Isabelle Huppert-led thriller “Elle”.
According to the novel’s synopsis, it follows journalist Nathan who is fascinated by mother-in-law, a poet named Gaby who lives in the same vast estate property as Nathan and his wife.
One day a promoter tries to buy parts of the land to build an amusement park and comes up against Gaby’s categorical refusal. Things get worse: a deputy gets annoyed, a hiker mysteriously disappears and Nathan unravels. The book unfolds from Nathan’s point of view and thus is an unreliable narrator.
The 85-year-old Verhoeven most recently helmed the lesbian nun period piece “Benedetta” and has been working on a Washington DC-set steamy political thriller named “Young Sinner” which he’s co-writing with screenwriter Edward Neumeier.
