We’ve heard several people talking in high praise of the script for Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” with the likes of Robert Pattinson, Colin Farrell and Andy Serkis all calling it a dark, beautiful and moving piece.
As previously reported, the film is set in Batman’s early days and follows him investigating a mystery which allows for the character’s detective skills to come to the fore. The suggestion is the story is in part inspired by the famed “The Long Halloween” comic storyline which would explain the use of multiple villains who serve more as supporting characters than outright antagonists.
Now a co-star in the project, Paul Dano who plays The Riddler, has offered up his take and again has nothing but praise for Reeves’ work. Talking with The Playlist about his directorial debut “Wildlife” and its imminent release as a Criterion collection disc, his “Batman” work was touched upon and he explains what has happened so far:
“I was filming. I flew home to visit my baby and then didn’t get to fly back [to set, because of coronavirus], which is a really strange thing. But I feel really good about it. I think Matt Reeves is the real deal. I was really surprised by his script, which I think is, is potentially really powerful. Hopefully we’ll get to get back to it sometime soon? I’m not sure.
There’s something fun there in my character and in all the characters. It’s the kind of movie that we’re just desperate to share on the big screen in a big way. So, I hope we all figure this [coronavirus situation] out and get excited to see a Batman movie. It will be worth it. It’s going to be really cool.”
The project began shooting in January but shut down partway through in March due to the coronavirus pandemic. With the UK open for filming, it’s expected shooting will resume later this Summer ahead of the film’s October 2021 release.
