With “Wonder Woman 1984” delayed to August, some of the earliest long-lead press coverage for the movie has already been done which has lead to today and a new Vanity Fair interview with helmer Patty Jenkins.
In the piece, Jenkins goes into detail about her comic book debut back in 2013 when she was hired to helm Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World”. Shen then left the project over creative differences during development, handing the job over to “Game of Thrones” alum Alan Taylor who delivered arguably the worst MCU film to date (bar “The Incredible Hulk” or “Iron Man 2”).
Jenkins, of course, went on to helm DC’s “Wonder Woman,” one of the best-reviewed comic book films of the modern era and now returns for the sequel. That doesn’t mean she has a grudge against Marvel, quite the opposite. As she explains she wanted a better quality script for the “Thor” follow-up and Marvel at the time disagreed:
“I did not believe that I could make a good movie out of the script that they were planning on doing. I think it would have been a huge deal – it would have looked like it was my fault. It would’ve looked like, ‘Oh my God, this woman directed it and she missed all these things.’
That was the one time in my career where I really felt like, ‘Do this with [another director] and it’s not going to be a big deal and maybe they’ll understand it and love it more than I do.’ You can’t do movies you don’t believe in. The only reason to do it would be to prove to people that I could. But it wouldn’t have proved anything if I didn’t succeed. I don’t think that I would have gotten another chance. And so, I’m super grateful.
Jenkins has previously praised Marvel despite their split, saying they: “gave me that chance in the first place and it was not en vogue to do so”. She also was totally in support of the hiring of Taika Waititi to helm “Thor: Ragnarok,” calling him: “Thor’s rightful director. Taika’s so good for Thor. Oh my God, I love that movie. His tone with Thor was just masterful.”
Jenkins found success with “Wonder Woman” which grossed over $820 million at the global box office. The sequel of course was delayed two months the other day and its star Gal Gadot has taken to Twitter today to discuss the delay, saying on Twitter: “In these dark and scary times, I am looking forward to a brighter future ahead where we can share the power of cinema together again. Excited to redate our WW84 film to August 14, 2020. I hope everyone is safe. Sending my love to you all.”
“Wonder Woman 1984” opens in cinemas August 14th.
