For almost a decade now, there have been murmurs of actor/filmmaker Mel Gibson developing a sequel to his 2004 juggernaut box-office hit “The Passion of the Christ,” but the film has always seemed to be stuck in the development phase.
Now though, a new report at World of Reel alleges that “The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection” is finally locking down a filming window with a late Spring start of production reportedly being eyed.
Jim Caviezel is said to be returning to the role of Jesus Christ. Caviezel was the last to offer an update on the project back in 2020, saying Gibson and screenwriter Randall Wallace were on the third draft of the script and promised it was “going to be the biggest film in world history”.
It’s now being reported that at least six drafts of the script have already been done with the film to “focus on the twenty-four hours encompassing Jesus’ passion and the events that occurred three days between his crucifixion and resurrection”.
The original grossed $612 million worldwide from a mere $30 million budget, turning it into one of the most successful independent films of all time. The original film also divided critics and was famously not shy about conveying gruesome violence and horror on screen.
How Gibson will handle the material is undoubtedly going to still cause controversy amongst not just believers and non-believers, but different groups of believers as well depending upon how he plans to portray the story.
