MUBI has set an October 14th U.S. theatrical release date for “Oldboy” and “The Handmaiden” director Park Chan-wook’s highly acclaimed new feature “Decision to Leave” which had its world premiere at Cannes.
In addition, the indie film distributor has exclusive streaming rights to the movie and will premiere it on their service later in the Fall.
In the film, a man falls from a mountain peak to his death. The detective in charge of the investigation, Hae-joon (Park Hae-il), comes to meet the dead man’s wife Seo-rae (Tang Wei). When she becomes a suspect, Hae-joon finds himself slowly developing an interest in her.
Each year British film industry trade outlet Screen International runs an annual ‘Jury Grid’ poll of ten top critics attending Cannes asking for a four-star score for each film in competition and then working out an average score from that.
“Decision to Leave” topped the 2022 poll with a 3.2/4, easily ahead of nearest rivals “Armageddon Time” (2.8) and “IO” (2.7). The score puts it up there with the best of the best of the past seven years including “Burning” (3.8), “Toni Erdmann” (3.7), “Drive My Car” (3.5), “Parasite” (3.5), “Paterson” (3.5), “Memoria” (3.4), “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” (3.3), “Pain and Glory” (3.3), “You Were Never Really Here” (3.2), “Loveless” (3.2), “Shoplifters” (3.2) and “Elle” (3.1).
The film, which won Park the Best Director honor at the festival, will first open in South Korea on June 29th. Park currently has an HBO series in the works titled “The Sympathizer” which will star Robert Downey Jr.
