NEON, the distributor of Best Picture winner “Parasite,” has responded to U.S. President Donald Trump’s dismissive remarks about the South Korean film and its success.
Trump used a rally in Colorado this week to discuss “Parasite” winning the Best Picture Oscar: “And the winner is… a movie from South Korea! What the hell was that all that about? We’ve got enough problems with South Korea, with trade. On top of that, they give them the best movie of the year. Was it good? I don’t know. Can we ‘Gone With the Wind’ back, please? ‘Sunset Boulevard.’ So many great movies.”
Shortly after, NEON responded to the comments, tweeting out “Understandable, he can’t read. #Bong2020”. The film itself has scored criticism from some corners including those who can’t grasp the idea of a ‘foreign’ movie winning Best Picture. One common thread though is many who have complained often haven’t actually seen the movie.
The Democratic National Committee also weighed in on Trump’s comments, saying: “Parasite is a foreign movie about how oblivious the ultra-rich are about the struggles of the working class, and it requires two hours of reading subtitles. Of course Trump hates it.”
Trump has also singled out Brad Pitt, branding him as a “little wiseguy”. “Parasite,” which won four Oscars, over 125 awards and is the highest-rated Best Picture winner of all time on Rotten Tomatoes, will be coming to IMAX cinemas this weekend.
