“Paranormal Activity” Stage Play In The Works

Paramount Pictures

Veteran producer Simon Friend, who helped turned Ang Lee’s “Life of Pi” into a multiple Tony-winning Broadway stage production, has scored the license to the Paramount horror movie series “Paranormal Activity”.

The plan is to adapt the property for London’s West End with Levi Holloway (“Grey House”) set to pen the script. The project is described as being in early development.

Oren Peli created the initial installment of the franchise which focuses on a family terrorized by a demon. The hook was that the entire franchise is seen through the perspective of video and cell phone cameras as opposed to more traditional filming techniques.

Made on micro-budgets, the movies are among the most profitable ever – the seven entries grossing almost $900 million so far on a combined budget of just $28 million.

The first film in particular, made for just $15,000 but resulting in $197 million in global box-office, is often cited as the most profitable film ever made.

Friend has also adapted “The Da Vinci Code” and “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” for the stage and produced the Oscar-winning 2020 film “The Father”.
