Paramount Pictures is set to remake the iconic 1958 Alfred Hitchcock-directed psychological thriller “Vertigo”.
Robert Downey Jr. is reportedly eyeing the James Stewart lead role of a former police detective forced to retire after a line of duty trauma leaves him with intense acrophobia.
He is soon hired by an acquaintance to shadow his wife (Kim Novak), who he feels is behaving erratically. The film, often cited as one of the greatest films ever made and regularly sitting high on all-time best film polls, famously was the first to use the now common dolly zoom effect that distorts perspective to create disorientation.
“Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight, who just signed on to write a “Star Wars” film, is penning the script while John Davis and John Fox are producing alongside Robert and Susan Downey.
The Hitchcock Estate reportedly favored the studio as the landing spot for the project as Paramount was the home for the original which was penned by Alec Coppel and Samuel A. Taylor from the Boileau-Narcejac novel “From Among the Dead”.
Downey recently produced the second season of HBO’s “Perry Mason” and will soon be seen in Park Chan-wook’s “The Sympathizer” for A24 and HBO.
