Paramount+ has now joined the ranks of Max and Disney+ on the list of streamers to remove content in exchange for a tax write-off.
THR reports that the streamer has not only cancelled four of its original series but is pulling all four of them from the service.
This includes its recently released and much promoted “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies” prequel series, which finished its run just three weeks ago, its competition series “Queen of the Universe” and its revival of “The Game” following two seasons.
The most high-profile cut is the animated and kids-focused “Star Trek: Prodigy,” with the studio reversing its decision on a season-two pickup, scrapping the series and pulling it from the service.
‘Prodigy’ was renewed for season two in November 2021 and so was well into postproduction when the order came down. CBS Studios will reportedly complete post-production work on the series and then shop both seasons to a new buyer.
Other content is expected to be removed from the platform in the coming weeks, but nothing more high profile than these four, which will begin to be removed from the service from next week.
How much of a tax write-off they’ll get is expected to be revealed in an upcoming earnings call. The news comes ahead of Paramount+ incorporating Showtime into the platform in the U.S. on Tuesday.
