“Oz” Dog Toto Gets A Warners Animated Film

Tony nominated director Alex Timbers has closed a deal to direct a loose feature musical adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s children’s book “Toto: The Dog-Gone Amazing Story of the Wizard of Oz” for Warner Bros. Pictures.

The book re-tells the events of L. Frank Baum’s book “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” but from the point of view of Dorothy Gale’s canine companion Toto. John August penned the script while Jared Stern and Derek Frey will produce.

Baum’s “Oz” stories have seen multiple film, TV and animated adaptations over the years from notable live-action features like the 1939 MGM musical classic and 1985’s nightmare-inducing “Return to Oz,” to Sam Raimi’s “Oz the Great and Powerful” and the 1986 animated series/telemovies of multiple books narrated by Margot Kidder.
