“Overlord” helmer Julius Avery has been set to direct a film adaptation of the famed Hiroya Oku manga title “Gantz” for Sony Pictures and Temple Hill.

The series tells the story of Kei Kurono and Masaru Kato, both of whom died in a train accident. They and several other recently become part of a semi-posthumous ‘game’ in which they are forced to hunt down and kill aliens armed with futuristic weapons.

Marc Guggenheim will pen the script but the project is still in early development with no production start date set. Avery has “Samaritan” opening next year and was recently hired to write and direct a new “Van Helsing” film for Universal Pictures.
