Christopher Nolan’s new film “Oppenheimer” has officially become the filmmaker’s first R-rated feature since “Insomnia” just over twenty years ago.
The MPA has handed out the rating for “some sexuality, nudity, and language”. The project marks Nolan’s first for Universal Pictures following a lengthy run at Warner Bros. Pictures. The film is also the longest movie of his career, coming in just sy of three hours.
Meanwhile, the Associated Press reports that “Oppenheimer” is heavy – physically. The film’s IMAX prints are said to be “11 miles of film stock” and weigh “some 600 pounds”.
Nolan shot the entire movie using large format film camera with the movie set to be released on IMAX 70mm, 70mm, IMAX digital, 35mm, Dolby Cinema and more. Nolan previously says the best format to see the film in is IMAX 70mm which plays at only a few locations, including AMC Universal CityWalk in Los Angeles and the AMC Lincoln Square in New York.
Nolan says: “By shooting on IMAX 70mm film, you’re really letting the screen disappear. You’re getting a feeling of 3D without the glasses. You’ve got a huge screen and you’re filling the peripheral vision of the audience. You’re immersing them in the world of the film.”
“Oppenheimer” hits theaters on July 21st, going up against another filmmaking juggernaut with Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” movie.
