“Oppenheimer” Aims For VOD In November

Universal Pictures

Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” will reportedly not be available for digital purchase or streaming at home until late November.

That’s a gap of approximately sixteen weeks (around 112 days) after its theatrical release – far longer than the current 45-day average standard for theatrical windows and longer than even the 90-day set standard for tentpole films prior to the pandemic.

The news was revealed in an Associated Press (via Collider) interview with producer Emma Thomas who confirmed the digital release window.

Part of the reason for the lengthy window is due to the film’s long-running success in specialty theaters playing its 70mm print. Those eleven-mile-long prints will be given a rest, and for those in good condition, the opportunity for re-releases is there – particularly for awards season.

The film of course was a part of the ‘Barbenheimer’ phenomenon which propelled “Barbie” to around $1.4 billion worldwide haul and “Oppenheimer” to now over $900 million worldwide. “Barbie” was released on digital on September 12th – approximately 53 days after its debut.

Others were much shorter in their jumps to digital, such as “Fast X” and “Meg 2: The Trench” at three weeks, and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” at four weeks.
