Disney and Pixar fantasy film “Onward” is set to open to approximately $40 million this weekend in the United States.
That is on the low end of pre-release forecasts which had the film hitting in the $40-50 million range. Chris Pratt and Tom Holland voice a pair of teenage elf brothers on a quest to resurrect their deceased father with a magical staff. Reviews have been good, not great, and audiences liked it – giving the film an A- Cinemascore.
“The Invisible Man” will come in second for its second weekend, taking a further $14 million to hit $52 million by the ten-day mark. The Ben Affleck-led sports drama “The Way Back” will come in third with around $8.5 million. Critical reviews are good but audiences are softer on it, awarding it a B+ Cinemascore.
“Sonic the Hedgehog” is looking to come in at fourth with a further $8 million, while “The Call of the Wild” will be fifth with $7 million.
