Disney has changed up its release slate once again and is ditching a planned theatrical release for Thea Sharrock’s “The One and Only Ivan” starring the voices of Angelina Jolie, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, and Danny DeVito.
That live-action/CG-animated hybrid film, based on Katherine Applegate’s award-winning book of the same name, will instead go straight to the studio’s streaming service on August 21st.
Ivan is a 400-pound silverback gorilla who shares a communal habitat in a suburban shopping mall with Stella the elephant and Bob the dog. He has few memories of the jungle where he was captured, but when a baby elephant named Ruby arrives, it touches something deep within him. Ruby is recently separated from her family in the wild, which causes him to question his life, where he comes from and where he ultimately wants to be.
This marks the third film the studio has done such a shift to Disney+ following “Artemis Fowl” launching today and “Hamilton” on July 3rd. In addition, Pixar’s “Onward” made the jump just weeks after its release in cinemas.
